The two countries agreed in 1998 to prevent the utilization of firearms within the conflict. The agreement bans the utilization of ammunition and explosives within the disputed border areas between the 2 countries to stop the conflict from escalating.

According to media reports in India, the 2 countries' troops clashed at an altitude of about 14,000 feet (4,28 m) on a steep mountain, and a few soldiers slipped and fell into the fast-flowing Galvan River, where temperatures were below freezing.
